Employment Services

Our goal through the employment services department at DSC is to empower, support and advocate for our consumer’s to have all the tools necessary to be successful in the world of work. Some of our common services are highlighted below.

Vocational Rehabilitation

With CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accreditation and through a partnership with OOD, DSC is able to offer a variety of vocational-related services to persons with disabilities in order to obtain or maintain employment.

Our certified staff will help consumers with community based assessments, work incentive programs, how to navigate Social Security and employment, how to create a resume, interview for a job, and maintain gainful employment.

Offered in CENTRAL • NORTHWEST

DSC offers a variety of vocational including but not limited to:

Resume help, interviewing skills, completion of online applications.

Assistance with accommodations on the job, communication support, additional training in the workplace, employer education on working with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

Job shadowing and informational interviewing in conjunction with interest profiling to assist in finding career options to best match your skills and interests.

A Certified work incentive practitioner can work with you and social security to help understand how going back to work, whether part time or full time can impact your benefits.

Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities

Summer Youth Career Exploration

3 week summer program for ages 14-15 to explore various careers, learn about basic employer expectations and work terminology as well as job shadow various employers throughout city of Columbus. All of these experiences assist the student in narrowing down various career paths of interest as they transition into high school.

Summer Youth Work Experience

5 week summer youth employment program that helps 16-21 year olds learn about work, develop resumes, apply for jobs, obtain work, and learn independent living skills.

(Pre-ETS)

Pre-Employment Transition Services

These are introductory services and are intended to help students with disabilities get an early start in identifying career interests. Pre-Employment Transition Services are for students with disabilities who need these services and have been determined eligible for Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services or are potentially eligible but have not applied for VR services. OOD partners with DSC to provide services to these students. In order to qualify, you must be 14 – 21 years old and referred through school to Opportunity for Ohioans with Disabilites.

The five major service categories covered in (Pre-ETS):

  • Job Exploration Counseling
  • Work-Based Learning Experiences
  • Counseling on Postsecondary
  • Workplace Readiness Training
  • Instruction in Self Advocacy


Activities typically completed in Pre-ETS services include:

  • Interviewing or job shadowing
  • Volunteering
  • Extra-curricular activities
  • Participating in activities available through school (e.g. job training, shadowing)

Community Work Incentives Coordinators

Work Incentives Planning and Coordination

Through specialized training and certification, our CWIC specialists will provide Work Incentives Planning services on how participating in vocational rehabilitation services and returning to work can positively impact the participants earning potential. Our specialists will also guide individuals on how employment will affect their benefits.
